Pros

  • Enormous, carefully sorted catalogue across films, music, books and software
  • Moderated release topics with descriptions and comments make fakes rare
  • Keepers project keeps old releases seeded
  • Very light ads and no popups on my visit
  • Fast, no-nonsense pages

Cons

  • Almost everything is in Russian
  • Dated forum layout with no mobile version
  • Account needed to download torrent files
  • Blocked in Russia and some other places

The Ninja

  • Use your browser's translate feature on topic pages; the first post holds the codec, audio track and subtitle details.
  • Read the last page of comments on a topic before downloading to catch sync or quality complaints.
  • Check the Правила (rules) before uploading or commenting; moderators enforce them.

Скачал? Раздавай!

That’s the slogan under the red-and-blue rutracker.org logo, and it translates to Downloaded? Then seed! It tells you most of what you need to know. This isn’t a slick search engine for torrents. It’s a forum, the biggest Russian-language one of its kind, where every release is a topic with a description, screenshots and a comment thread underneath. The news box on my visit announced the tracker’s 22nd birthday, so it has been doing this since 2004, when it still ran as torrents.ru.

A layout from another decade

Grey bars, Verdana text, blue links and little folder icons. The homepage is the forum index: a left sidebar of FAQs and BitTorrent client guides (qBittorrent, uTorrent, Linux clients, even a list of clients the tracker refuses), and a long centre column of sections with a sidebar of Авторские раздачи, which are releases posted by the artists themselves. The search box sits in the header next to Регистрация and Вход.

It’s all in Russian, apart from one English link in the VPN section about torrenting safely. If you don’t read Cyrillic, your browser’s translate button does a decent job on topic pages. There’s no mobile layout, so on a phone you’ll be pinching and zooming. Honestly, once you learn where things are, the old design is fast to use, because nothing moves and nothing loads that you didn’t ask for.

How deep it goes

This is where RuTracker earns its reputation. Films are split into Soviet cinema, Фильмы 2026, art-house, DVD, HD and UHD Video, and 3D. Series have their own UHD and HD sections, with a separate area for shows still airing. Anime has an ongoing-series section. Then it keeps going: audiobooks, language courses, training videos, classical and jazz, chanson, karaoke, and a section for sheet music and libretti, which I’ve rarely seen anywhere else. Games, Windows and console software, Linux and macOS round it out.

The footer has a Случайная раздача link that drops you on a random release. I lost twenty minutes to it. The tracker also runs a Keepers project (Хранители), whose volunteers keep old, rare releases seeded, so a 15-year-old documentary can still have someone sharing it.

Finding a clean release

Because every torrent is a moderated forum post, fakes are much rarer than on open indexes. Read the first post for the video and audio details, scroll the comments for complaints about sync or quality, and check the seed count before you commit. Registration is free and open; you can browse as a guest, but you’ll need an account to grab torrent files, and the tracker keeps upload and download stats for each user, with a whole FAQ on how they’re counted.

Ads and the block situation

Ads are light. I spotted a Реклама на сайте link and a small counter script, but no popups and no redirects on load. The site has been blocked in Russia for years, which is why there’s a whole section about it near the top. It also loaded quickly for me.

Who it’s for

Russian speakers, obviously, but also anyone chasing older films, lossless music, niche audiobooks or software that public trackers lost years ago. If you want a pretty interface or English everywhere, you’ll bounce off the homepage.
