First look

Joi opens with a simple Yes, I’m over 18 check and then lands you on one of the best-looking homepages in the AI chat space. It’s black, rounded and minimal, set in the geometric Outfit font, with a lowercase joi logo top left and just four links in a pill-shaped menu: Explore, Gallery, Create AI and Chats. A wide banner carousel runs across the top, and on my visit it was promoting a new short called Careful what you wish for, Adriana with a pink Watch now button. Short story episodes clearly sit alongside the chat.

The characters are the selling point

The grid below is where Joi earns its keep. Every card has a little personality label in the corner (Straight & Curious, Kawaii Cosplayer, Straight and Focused, Busty Asian), then a name and age (all listed as 21 or older on the cards I saw), a like count and a message count. The numbers are big: one character showed 27.7K likes and 22.5 million messages, another 24.7K likes and 13.4 million. Most are tagged Joi Original, meaning they’re written by the site.

And they really are written. Each bio is a full paragraph with a backstory, hobbies and a distinct voice: a cheerleader who’s strict about training, a cosplayer streamer in Tokyo, a punk comic-shop worker. They also get explicit fast, so this is not one to scroll on a work laptop. Still, it’s far more effort than the one-line bios on cheaper sites, and it shows in how differently each character talks.

Filters and making your own

Above the grid you can search, filter by Any creator and Any age, switch between Girls and other genders, and tap chips for Anime, LGBT+, Fantasy, Dominant, Kinky, Trans, Lesbian and Gay. The first tile in the grid is the AI Generator: Create your own AI Girlfriend, with a Create button underneath. The FAQ covers visuals, anime-style chat, custom characters and whether characters remember your preferences.

Speed

Snappy. The homepage is fairly big, but it came up quickly on our test and scrolling through the cards felt smooth. The design scales down neatly to a phone, where the card grid suits a portrait screen well.

Ads, privacy and price

No ad networks, no popunders, no clutter, just Cloudflare’s bot check and image delivery. The FAQ positions Joi as a safe, anonymous space for adult AI chat. What I didn’t see on the homepage was a price. Sign-up is there for saving chats and characters, and most apps in this space charge for heavier use, so check inside after you register before assuming it’s all free.

Final word

Joi AI is the one I’d show someone who thinks AI companion sites all look cheap. Beautiful design, characters with real personality, and no ads in sight. Just check the pricing once you’re inside.
