Shaq and a giant 78%
NordVPN’s homepage doesn’t do subtle. On my visit the hero was Shaquille O’Neal holding a laptop in front of a glowing, chrome-blue ‘78%’ the size of a building, under the line ‘The best VPN service just got better’. A thin black bar across the very top showed my IP, my ISP and, in red, ‘Your Status: Unprotected’. It’s clever theatre. A cookie box popped up in the bottom left before I could do anything else.
The design is polished: black hero, clean Inter type, a red ‘Get NordVPN’ button that keeps reappearing as you scroll. It’s also long. Keep going and you reach a full FAQ covering everything from ‘Are VPNs legal?’ to ‘Is there an absolutely free VPN?’.
More than a VPN now
The pitch has shifted. Nord is selling an ‘all-in-one’ security app: the VPN, a built-in ‘next-gen antivirus’ that blocks scam sites, phishing, malware, ads and trackers, and Dark Web Monitor for leaked personal data. The Features menu adds Meshnet, Dedicated IP, a new ‘Call and message protection’ feature and multi-device support. Further down there’s identity theft recovery through a partner, with ‘up to $1M’ in benefits mentioned. Some of that is genuinely useful. Some of it feels like a bundle built for a sales chart, so check which plan includes what.
Apps and servers
The download menu covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. The page claims 7,000+ servers in 225+ locations and use on up to 10 devices at once, or on your router to cover the whole home. Those are Nord’s numbers, not mine, but by any count it’s one of the biggest networks around.
Price and the fine print
The banner on my visit offered a Black Friday deal of 78% off plus 3 extra months, backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. That discount carries a little superscript footnote, as do the words ‘best’ and ‘fastest’, so read the small print, especially the renewal price after your first term. Check the pricing page for current plans.
Privacy on the page itself
A privacy brand greeting you with a cookie banner and loading Google Tag Manager and DoubleClick analytics is a bit ironic, though it’s standard for big commercial sites. There are no third-party ads. The page is heavy, with lots of large images, and it felt sluggish to finish loading.
Who it’s for
If you want a mainstream VPN with apps for everything, a huge server list and extra security tools in one subscription, NordVPN is an easy pick. If you only want a simple tunnel without the antivirus and identity extras, you may end up paying for a lot you never touch.
